New instruments for magnetic investigation of sediments

The laboratory recently acquired a series of new instruments for magnetic investigation of sediments. The new instruments allow the measurement of high and low frequency magnetic susceptibility, as well as magnetic susceptibility vs. high and low temperatures (-196 à 800oC). These measurements are used to determine the mineralogy and grain size of the magnetic grains. A new instrument was also acquired to determine the anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility (AMS). The later property is used to determine the magnetic fabric of the sediments.
