REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

The candidate will have a PhD in Earth Sciences (physical geography, geology, geological engineering, oceanography, or a related discipline) and a strong background in paleomagnetism and sedimentology. A solid practical knowledge of instruments commonly used in paleomagnetism and relevant experience at sea or in the field are also required. Finally, some knowledge of French will be an advantage, but is not a requirement, and experience in student supervision would be an asset.

PHD project on natural hazards and paleomagnetism at the Insitut des Sciences de la mer de Rimouski (ISMER) in close collaboration with the Institut de physique du globe de Paris (IPGP)

In the framework of the CASEIS (SEISmes dans les CAraïbes) research project, a scientific expedition lead by the Institut de physique du globe de Paris (IPGP) in collaboration with several other French and international institutions will take place in the Caribbean from May 28 to July 4 2016 on board the French research vessel the Pourquoi pas ? The objective is to sample a series of long sediment cores to reconstruct the frequency of catastrophic events such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, submarine mass movements and tsunamis in the area during the Quaternary. In collaboration with the researchers and students involved in the project, the candidate will mostly use the magnetic and physical properties of the sediments to characterize turbidites and other rapidly deposited layers in order to determine the trigger mechanism, as well as the influence of these layers on the magnetization acquisition process. The candidate will also play a key role in establishing the magnetostratigraphy of the collected cores.

EXPECTED STARTING DATE

Summer 2016 (May 2016) or Fall 2016 at the latest, but the student will have to participate to the oceanographic expedition.

Projet de Doctorat sur les risques naturels et paléomagnétisme à l'Institut des Sciences de la mer de Rimouski (ISMER) et en étroite collaboration avec l'Institut de physique du globe de Paris (IPGP)

Dans le cadre du projet CASEIS (SÉISmes dans les CAraïbes), une mission océanographique dirigée par l'Institut de physique du globe de Paris (IPGP) en collaboration avec plusieurs autres organismes en France et à l'étranger aura lieu du 28 mai au 4 juillet 2016 dans les Caraïbes à bord du navire de recherche français le Pourquoi pas ? L'objectif est de récolter une série de carottes sédimentaires pour reconstituer la fréquence des événements catastrophiques tels que les éruptions volcaniques, séismes, glissements sous-marins et tsunamis au cours du Quaternaire. En collaboration avec les chercheurs et étudiants impliqués dans le projet, le candidat utilisera principalement les propriétés magnétiques et physiques des sédiments pour caractériser les turbidites et autres couches déposées rapidement dans le but d'identifier le mécanisme déclencheur et de déterminer l'influence de ces dépôts sur l'acquisition de l'aimantation. Le candidat jouera aussi un rôle important dans l'établissement de la magnétostratigraphie des séquences sédimentaires qui seront récoltées.

DATE PRÉVUE DE DÉBUT

Session d'été 2016 (mai 2016) ou d'automne 2016, au plus tard. L'étudiant devra participer à la mission en mer.

BOURSE

Pour ce projet, une bourse de 15 900 $CAN/an minimum est disponible pour une période de 3 ans. Des bourses d'exemption de frais de scolarité majorés sont aussi accessibles aux candidats étrangers.

PROFIL RECHERCHÉ

Le (la) candidat(e) possède une formation en sciences de la Terre (géographie physique, géologie, génie géologique, océanographie ou une discipline connexe) et possède idéalement des bases en sédimentologie et/ou paléomagnétisme. La connaissance de l'anglais, une expérience pertinente en mer et en laboratoire constitueront des atouts.
