&lt;p&gt;The candidate will have a PhD in Earth Sciences (physical geography, geology, geological engineering, oceanography, or a related discipline) and a strong background in paleomagnetism and sedimentology. A solid practical knowledge of instruments commonly used in paleomagnetism and relevant experience at sea or in the field are also required. Finally, some knowledge of French will be an advantage, but is not a requirement, and experience in student supervision would be an asset.&lt;/p&gt;

The objective is to sample a series of long sediment cores to reconstruct the frequency of catastrophic events such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, submarine mass movements and tsunamis in the area during the Quaternary. In collaboration with the researchers and students involved in the project, the candidate will mostly use the magnetic and physical properties of the sediments to characterize turbidites and other rapidly deposited layers in order to determine the trigger mechanism, as well as the influence of these layers on the magnetization acquisition process. The candidate will also play a key role in establishing the magnetostratigraphy of the collected cores.&lt;/p&gt;

L'objectif est de r&#233;colter une s&#233;rie de carottes s&#233;dimentaires pour reconstituer la fr&#233;quence des &#233;v&#233;nements catastrophiques tels que les &#233;ruptions volcaniques, s&#233;ismes, glissements sous-marins et tsunamis au cours du Quaternaire. En collaboration avec les chercheurs et &#233;tudiants impliqu&#233;s dans le projet, le candidat utilisera principalement les propri&#233;t&#233;s magn&#233;tiques et physiques des s&#233;diments pour caract&#233;riser les turbidites et autres couches d&#233;pos&#233;es rapidement dans le but d'identifier le m&#233;canisme d&#233;clencheur et de d&#233;terminer l'influence de ces d&#233;p&#244;ts sur l'acquisition de l'aimantation. Le candidat jouera aussi un r&#244;le important dans l'&#233;tablissement de la magn&#233;tostratigraphie des s&#233;quences s&#233;dimentaires qui seront r&#233;colt&#233;es.&lt;/p&gt;
